The Plot
Fianto Duri is a charm that conjures up a nearly impregnable (protection) barrier around the caster.
FD takes place after the events of the second battle. Hogwarts opened up for the next term, same as ever, after a lot of work. Minerva McGonagall refuses to let the school end just because of some pesky war. She even let the past seventh years return as "eighth years" so they can get caught up with their studies. Some hadn't learned much with the Carrows running around, and some didn't attend at all.
As far as canon goes, screw it. Or don't, if you prefer. What's being said is this; Hermione can end up with Ginny, or maybe even Malfoy. Relationships aren't set in stone.
I don't know how to do plots well so this is all you're getting. I think it's simple enough.
